SSD Drive

 

I decided to upgrade the hard drive in the car computer to an SSD (Solid State Disk). A computer installed in a car is subjected to heat, humidity, dust, and shocks, and the installed hard drive is not designed for those conditions.

 

An SSD, as its name suggests, does not contain moving parts, unlike a regular HDD. It is based on NAND flash technology, and it is fair to say that its operation is similar to the well-known DiskOnKey. Another advantage is the significantly faster read and write access times compared to an HDD. While the read and write times for an HDD are around 60MB/s, the SSD boasts speeds of 250MB/s.

 

Initially, the use of SSDs was in black boxes, fire control systems, sonars, radars, and military laptops where high performance and resistance to harsh environmental conditions were required. Today, the decline in prices has made SSDs an attractive alternative in various applications, including in laptops.

To test the performance of the drive, I used software called ATTO Disk Benchmark. You can see the performance differences between the SSD and HDD, as well as the internal structure of an SSD and an HDD.
